What is The Hero’s Journey?
The Hero’s Journey is a story sequence of events coined by cultural mythologist Joseph Campbell. Our hero begins the story in his Ordinary World–living life as he or she always has. Then, something happens, usually referred to as the Inciting Incident, which propels the hero on a journey. The Inciting Incident could be something forced upon him, or it could be intentional. Once the hero Crosses the Threshold from the Ordinary World into the Unknown World, there is no turning back. The hero experiences trials and tribulations along his journey and gains insights into the world and himself. Mentors guide him. Adversaries attempt to stand in his way. The story comes to an end when the hero returns from his journey a transformed person. He shares his story with others and it is medicine for the soul. We listen and experience an unanticipated connection or Call to Action.
I learned about The Hero’s Journey midway through grad school when I was writing my thesis manuscript. Noticing similarities between two seemingly opposing narratives, I reached out to a friend and trained anthropologist, Tom Bodkin. He introduced me to The Hero’s Journey and encouraged me to learn more about it. I did, and it has changed my life. Not only do I incorporate the Hero’s Journey in my writing, but it influences the way I choose guests to come on the show and the lens through which we navigate their story.
